Maintenance and service life of different types of tableware

Pulished on Mar. 05, 2026

The ceramic tableware on the dining table is not only containers for holding food, but also small details that enhance the dining experience. But did you know? The three

common types of tableware - bone china, stoneware, and ordinary ceramics - have significant differences in maintenance methods and lifespan. Choosing the right method

can ensure that they can accompany the dining table for a long time.

Bone china: The "noble porcelain" with delicate and fragile texture, bone china gets its name because animal bone powder is added to the raw materials. It has a light and

transparent texture, and when struck, it produces a clear and melodious sound like a bell. It is the "appearance-oriented star" among tableware. However, its hardness is

relatively low.

When using it, avoid colliding with hard objects and never use steel wool to wipe it, otherwise, it is prone to leaving scratches. When cleaning, it is recommended

to use a soft cloth and mild detergent. After washing, dry it promptly to prevent water stains from remaining. The service life of bone china tableware is usually 5 to 8 years.

If properly maintained, it can even be used for a longer period. It should be noted that bone china is not resistant to high temperatures. Try not to put it in a microwave or oven,

as sudden cooling and heating may cause cracking.

Porcelain: The sturdy and durable "practical style" porcelain lies between pottery and porcelain. It has a hard texture, low water absorption rate, and is the preferred choice for

daily use in restaurants and households. Its wear resistance and shock resistance are superior to bone china. When cleaning, steel wool can be used to remove stubborn stains,

and it can also withstand microwave ovens and dishwashers. The maintenance of porcelain tableware which manufactured from China is relatively simple. Just avoid prolonged contact with acidic foods to prevent

the glaze from being corroded. Under normal usage conditions, the lifespan of porcelain tableware can reach 10-15 years. Even if there are slight scratches, it will not affect the safety of use.

Ordinary Ceramic: A Cost-Effective Choice

Ordinary ceramic tableware wholesale from Chinese factory directly is affordable, comes in various styles, and is the basic choice for most families. It has a relatively thick texture and medium hardness, but the quality of the

glaze varies. When using it, avoid sudden cooling and heating to prevent the tableware from cracking. For cleaning, a soft cloth is sufficient. If there is any damage to the glaze, it

should be replaced promptly to avoid the release of harmful substances. The lifespan of ordinary ceramic tableware is generally 3 to 5 years. If it frequently comes into contact with

high temperatures or hard objects, its lifespan will be shortened accordingly.

In fact, regardless of the material of the tableware, regular inspection and proper maintenance are the keys to extending its lifespan. After each use, clean it promptly to prevent the

accumulation of food residues that could breed bacteria; store them separately to avoid collisions and wear and tear. Understanding the characteristics of different tableware allows

them to maximize their value on the dining table, being both safe and beautiful.
