On B2B international trade platforms, hundreds of RFQs come in every day. Most are straightforward: buyers list products and quantities. But the ones that truly lead to long‑term cooperation are often those with a casual “by the way” question – because behind that lies a pain point the buyer hasn't even fully articulated.
Last year, we experienced exactly this. A purchasing manager from a 5‑star hotel in South America sent us an inquiry with a detailed list of ceramic dinnerware. At the end of the message, he casually added, “Do you also have stainless steel cutlery? If yes, please send me your catalog.”
The buyer thought it was just a quick side question. But for us, that question won us the entire order – and a response that surprised us: “I didn't expect to get everything from just one supplier – ceramics, cutlery, glassware. You saved me so much time and freight cost.”
Here is the full story.

Many factories treat every inquiry the same way – lowest price, high MOQ, one 40HQ container per single item. But this logic doesn’t work for a 5‑star hotel buyer.
Let’s compare:
| Requirement | Importer / Wholesaler | 5‑Star Hotel |
|---|---|---|
| Order quantity | Large | Small per SKU |
| Quality focus | Price first, medium quality acceptable | Premium quality, timeless design, brand‑aligned |
| Packaging | Customized gift box | Safe, protective packaging – no frills needed |
| Product range | 2‑3 items, even only 1 item per container | Many styles for different restaurants/banquet halls |
In other words, what a hotel really needs is multi‑category, high quality, flexible MOQ, and consolidated shipment. If you only offer one category, you will likely end up at the bottom of their supplier list.
Instead of simply replying “Yes, we have cutlery, pls see the attachment”, we prepared an integrated solution.
We recommended plain design regular ceramic plates – which fit any hotel style (Chinese restaurant, Western dining, buffet). For packaging, we didn’t push expensive custom boxes. Instead, we used safe packaging: a safe inner box and 5‑ply corrugated cartons. This ensures breakage protection for long sea freight without charging the customer for unnecessary luxury packaging.

The buyer asked for cutlery – we gave him more than a catalog. We showed our own factory in Jieyang City(Guangdong). We attached the full production process flow – from steel sheet stamping, polishing, heat treatment, final inspection to packaging. And we clearly stated: a customized laser logo is acceptable, meeting the brand needs of a 5‑star hotel.

Three days after sending our proposal, the customer replied. He wrote a long message, and these words stayed with us:
“Actually I was just casually asking if you have cutlery. If not, it would be fine to recommend a factory you work with. But I didn’t expect that you already cover home use glassware, stainless steel cutlery, and ceramic dinnerware and opal glassware, etc. With you, I achieved one‑stop sourcing – this saves me a huge amount of time and also reduces shipping costs.”
He added that before, he had to find a ceramic factory, a cutlery factory, and a glassware factory separately – three negotiations, three factory audits, three lead times, three freight payments to the same port. Now, with us, he deals with one salesperson, one invoice, and one bill of lading.
The order was shipped smoothly, and the customer sent us photos of the goods upon arrival, expressing interest in long‑term cooperation.
This case is no accident. It comes from our conscious effort to integrate supply chains around hotel food & beverage needs:
Ceramic dinnerware – Deep cooperation with high‑quality ceramic factories. Regular stock items available, supporting small mixed batches.
Glassware – Wine glasses, water glasses, tumblers can be sourced and shipped together. It is the principal project of our company.
Stainless steel cutlery – Our own factory in Jieyang, full control from raw material to finished product, especially good at custom logo service.
Logistics experience – We have a 15,000㎡ warehouse in Guangzhou and know how to mix different categories (ceramics, cutlery, glass) in one container – safe and efficient.
Simply put, we don’t produce every item ourselves. But we focus on the key categories around the hotel kitchen and dining table, make them deep and reliable, and deliver them as a one‑stop solution.
A casual “by the way” inquiry turned into the start of a long‑term partnership. The key was never luck – it was understanding the real pain points of hotel sourcing and having a solid supply chain to back it up.
